Our lives have been a series of events, actions, labels, and self-exploration. We spend the majority of our lives asking ourselves the same question, “Who am I”? Does this question ever fully get answered?
I have learned that everything we think, perceive, and encounter leads us to believe there is a purpose. We do not want to spend out our days thinking this is all for nothing. So, we have created a narrative introduced by societal norms to contain and place us into categories. These categories hold hierarchy, standards, and unrealistic expectations. You were probably told that it was imperative that you went to college, got a degree, worked your butt off, and it would guarantee a job in your desired field. Not only would you be guaranteed a job, but it would come with a live-able wage that could support a family, as well as be the only path to success. What do you then? You put 100s of 1000s of dollars of loans in your cosigner’s and your name in order to go to this alleged, job security machine called, “University”. We are thought to believe there is a system in which we must follow, and there is no way to venture outside of the box.
As most of us know now… job security is anything but secure; the cost of living has gone up, but the “degree-worthy” entry-level position has not increased its wages. We are left beyond broke, confused, and most likely pissed off. I know I sure was.
…only to not even need my degree to make me successful
My version of an entry-level job in the mental health field paid a decent amount but came with emotional, physical, and mental burnout. I was lucky to enjoy and learn a lot from this stepping stone into my career path. I cannot say that it gave me what I truly needed to be my version of successful. As well as not worth the student loans. However, I managed to take away what I learned and transform it into my business. My experience did, in fact, lead me in the right direction, only to not even need my degree to make me successful. Yes, becoming a virtual assistant does not require any form of degree. That being said, what you choose to niche in should be considered by your experience. On top of that, experience is everywhere. You want to learn tech set-up? Get on Youtube. Want to know more about SEO? Take the free course available to you online. Want to make smart business choices? Invest in a creditable business coach. Find a mentor and get started.
What does getting started look like? You should begin by making business accounts on your desired platform, getting a business bank account, and getting an EIN. An EIN is your Employer Identification Number, which registers your business and is recognized in the United States as your identification. That is an essential step you must remember! Now that you have the basics covered start your market research as you grow your social media accounts. Get in front of your niche to speak with your ideal clients. Ask questions, find what they need help with, and build connections.
You may be overwhelmed by this information overload, and for clarity, I will be breaking it all down for you. It is time to break these unrealistic societal norms and create our own paths. The idea of work culture will be terminated, reimagined, and redefined. I want you all to see that you can be successful without acquiring a degree you will never use nor make adequate money from having it. This message is directed to those unhappy and unfulfilled by their current situation. By no means am I going to tell you to quit a job otherwise. If you are happy and looking forward to your future in your current career, I am beyond happy for you. Stick to what your heart and mind tells you is right for you. On the other hand, if you are not happy where you are, and are looking for a shift in direction know that it is okay. Do not stay where you are now if it’s not making you happy. It is okay to change in order to be the true you. Do not let others persuade you to follow a path that is not for you. Being authentic to yourself is by being honest to yourself.
